Vitality

Hello there! Today we are talking vitality… Men’s vitality!

This is a popular topic here at Candid Medical. Men check in with me because their energy is low, they find themselves on a lot of medication or they worry their T is low. (T is for testosterone). Wives check in with me because they see their husbands struggle to juggle work and home. Their husband may not be having as much fun as he used to

The common societal message is that the entire problem here is low T. As you know, T does drop as men get older. Also, being out of shape or stressed out lowers T levels. This drop, though, is often something we call functional hypogonadism. In other words, it is low testosterone that can be reversed with lifestyle changes.

Don’t tell the men’s clinics, though! Here in town, men’s clinics charge about $250/month. If you start T at age 50 and live 30 years… That’s $250/mo x 12 mo/year = $3000 per year x 10 years = $30,000 and x 30 years (plus inflation) $100,000!!! Yikes. Not only are you making the men’s clinic a lot of money, once a man takes testosterone for several years, his body loses the ability to make T and he will need to take it forever!!

May I submit to you that it doesn’t have to be this way? You can boost your T levels naturally. Well, Dr. Joe, what do you recommend? My basic starter “stack” for better T levels is: healthy diet, adequate sleep and resistance training. (Turns out this will get you off all your other meds, too!)

Eat a lot of healthy starches and plants and avoid the butter, cheese, bacon and meat. Your T needs healthy blood vessels to work! What else needs healthy blood vessels to work? Muscles! From the world of weight lifting, to increase your lean body mass you need to do resistance training, take in enough protein and have healthy blood vessels!

So, in addition to eating well, I have my muscle “stack”. It is a nitric oxide booster (Upbeet) + protein powder (NeoLife Shake or NeoLife Performance Protein) + natural energy boost when needed (NeoLife Elevate). Plus weight training 4 days per week!

Remember, if someone has depression, we have to give 8 people an antidepressant to make 1 person feel better. If you give depressed people exercise, 1 out of 2 people who start to exercise will feel better! This means to me that a lot of what we consider “vitality” is not really related to T. It is related to how we are living our life.
