Up High or Down Low?

When one is up this high in the air, it is pretty easy to feel more calm. Sunrises and mountains speak of majesty and evoke a sense of gratitude and purpose.

It’s not so easy on the ground. On the ground, real life starts to intrude. Concerns present themself, like the need for food, shelter, and safety. Our worries can sweep us away.

I’ve always been intrigued by the juxtaposition of these two ideas. Philosophers say to put distance between yourself and your problems. While many times this works, sometimes the problems are urgent and scary. A tension develops. Do we turn a blind eye when we put distance between ourselves and our problem? Do we wreck ourselves trying to change the system?

The background of this picture and this post is that I took the picture while heading to a burnout conference where I have been invited to speak. And, although burnout is a real thing, sometimes burnout is a catchall word that can represent many things.

I leave you with a quote that I think is related.

Friends are kind to each other’s hopes. They cherish each others dreams.

-Henry David Thoreau
